Why Go Greek? - For Students
If you are reading this page, you are likely to be considering one of the most important events of your college career: deciding whether or not to join a fraternity. This is a big decision, and it should not be taken lightly. We have prepared several resources to help you in your decision. Although they are useful, we feel that you should not base your decision solely on our written materials. If you have any questions or concerns, PLEASE ask any of our brothers. We are here to help you, should you decide to join or even should you not.
Your parents are an important part of your life, and they probably have questions and concerns about your thought of joining a fraternity. We have prepared some information for parents that they might find useful. Of course, you should also feel free to read this information. If you or your parents would like to know more about us, or to speak to somebody in person, please call one of our officers, whose contact information may be found on the officers page.
Your biggest concern about joining a fraternity can probably be summarized in one word: hazing. Sigma Tau Gamma does not haze. Let me repeat that: we do not haze, not at all, not under any situation. This is not simply some rule mandated by our national organization or the university. We do not haze because we do not believe in it. There are no exceptions to this rule. We believe so strongly in this policy that we have an open pledge program. Without any commitment, you can ask any brother to see a copy of our pledge program. We have nothing to hide, and we encourage you to do so. If you, at any point, feel like you are being hazed, being forced to do something against your will or better judgment, we encourage you to report the event to our exucitive officers, our national office, our alumni advisors, and our Greek life advisors. We have a zero tolerance policy with regards to hazing. With that being said, let's move on to other issues.
There are plenty of stereotypes about fraternities. When someone thinks about a "frat," he or she probably thinks it's all about getting hammered, getting girls, and partying every day and through each night. Anybody who is in a Greek organization can tell you that this is emphatically not true. When many of us started hanging out with the brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma, we realized that it's simply a group of guys who live together, who get along well with each other, and who share many common interestes. This is what Sig Tau is really about. It may be Ultimate Frisbee, video game tournaments, poker, or just having a good time, but we assure you that you will find something that you like to do with us. It won't hurt to try! You can always decide that fraternity life is not for you, and there will not be any hard feelings. At least you'll have at least a few guys to hang around with, even if you don't join!
If you do decide to join, the house gives you an automatic place to go and hang out. If you are stressed with grades, or you need someone to talk to, or you just want to have a good time, your brothers are always and will always be there for you. You can come to the house on a Wednesday at two in the morning, and someone will probably be downstairs working on homework or a personal project, being bored or just hanging out. Sure, we throw parties, we invite girls over, and we have alcohol. But we are not only about these things. We are a group of people who are here for you when you needs us, and that's the best part about a fraternity.
